Well, here we are just about the embark on another year of Scouting in Daventry & District.
Emergency Services Funday,
A big massive thank you to Ellie and Josh for their fundraising efforts for the World Scout Jamboree at the Emergency Services Funday on Wednesday 22nd August, and to the Scout and Adults who supported them. These young people were true ambassadors to Scouting.
The search for a DESC is over
We are pleased to announce an individual has come forward for the role of District Explorer Scout Commissioner (DESC), like all appointments in Scouting, this will be subject to an approval by the appointments committee.
We are still looking for individuals to support the DESC, in the role of Administrator, District Leader, and someone who is willing to give me support in the Young Leaders unit on a regular basis.
I currently remain in contact with the Assistant County Commissioner Explorers and have been asked to forward on the following items of news:
There is a new Higher Awards panel at County Level for gold Duke of Edinburgh and Queens Scout Awards. There is a move towards bringing similar panels into the Districts for bronze and silver level DofE, and diamond platinum levels Chiefs Scout Awards. Glendon District is currently running this trial and this will be followed by Grafton District, all Districts will receive support from the County team in this process.
Young Leaders Weekend
A Young Leaders weekend has been provisionally booked at the John Lowther Centre for the weekend of 1st to the 3rd February 2019. This will be a multi-modules weekend with an option, to stay the weekend, or to dip into modules. Training will be delivered from a number of Young Leader Trainers from across the County including myself.
County Youth Forum
This has been extremely tricky to set up, so it has been agreed that the Districts work with their Youth Commissioners to look to set this up locally, with the first to be held by or slightly after December 2018. The ACC Explorers will be talking to the Youth Commissioners to get this idea off the ground. All units are to encourage the Young People in developing their own programme.
As we gain younger leaders there are concerns about this training being required, this is currently being looked at by the County Explorer team.
Mini Census (URGENT)
The County is looking at further training specifically for Explorer leaders, thus giving you an advanced set of skills, more appropriate for the age group. This includes Bushcraft / Survival Training, Advanced levels of First Aid, Terrain Permits etc. You will not be able to undertake this further training if you have not already completed mandatory training, or revalidated your wood-beads, as an Explorer leader or Assistant. If there are any training issues could you please forward back to me so I can forward this to County to be looked into.
Any other business
Marathon Walk – 22nd September 2018 at Grendon
This event is open to all of our Explorers / Young Leaders, and thank you to the County there is an opportunity to camp the night before with a fully catered breakfast. There will be a charge of £15. I will do the NAN form and Vincent Burgess, ACC Explorers, is willing to act as my permit holder. I will need to know as soon as possible, please.
The County AGM if anyone is interested will be on the 29th September 2018 again at the John Lowther Centre, I will be in Wales training for my ‘M’ permit so unable to attend this year.
And finally from me…
A big thank you for keeping things going for the Explorers since Johns departure in 2016, unfortunately as many of you are aware Richard was not long in the role before having to retire. With a DESC soon to be appointed this is a very exciting time for the District, and there will be a drive towards democratic, youth shaped, Explorer Scouting.
I will continue to attend County meetings, for the foreseeable, or at least send a report to ensure our voice is heard, and I do speak informally to the District Executive Committee.
You may notice that the Daventry & District Explorers Facebook page has been resurrected in an effort to keep in touch on a vast District. There is also a twitter feed @DavExplorers. I ask you to invite your Explorers and Parents / Guardians to follow us if they have social media.
Programming for the Future
As mentioned above the new DESC will be encouraging Youth Focused Scouting, and will be looking at all units to deliver a balanced programme that focuses around key themes. I have found this resource very useful, and also the #YouShape card resource, which I will upload.
A very useful way I have done this is writing the challenges areas on the wall and using an ideas harvest, or an idea around voting, you can fit this around a discussion about democracy, and if you really wanted to go deep you can also talk about the suffrage movement, and the 100 year anniversary of the female right to vote.
